Passing of Dr Alexander Machkevitch, one of the Founders of ERG

We announce with great sorrow that on March 22, 2025, Alexander Machkevitch, one of the founders of ERG, passed away at the age of 71 after a long illness.

Dr Machkevitch graduated from the Kyrgyz State University. He has a PhD in pedagogical sciences and a doctorate in philosophy.

One of the founders of the Eurasian Industrial Association that brought together several major industrial enterprises in Kazakhstan’s metals and mining, energy and logistics sectors, and one of the founders of Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), Alexander Machkevitch for many years was most actively, directly involved in development and management of ERG. This includes his tenure as Chairman of the ERG Board of Directors from 2014 to 2024. For many years Dr Machkevitch was also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Eurasian Bank.

During these years ERG made great strides and implemented many innovative projects. New production facilities were set up, including the Kazakhstan Aluminium Smelter, the country’s only producer of high-grade primary aluminum. The launch of smelting unit No. 4 was instrumental to develop Aktobe ferroalloys plant as one of the world’s leading ferrochrome producers.

Alexander Machkevitch made an enormous contribution to the development of Kazakhstan’s metals and mining sector and the country’s economy.

In 1999-2024, Dr Machkevitch was a member of the Foreign Investors’ Council (FIC) under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, taking active part in discussions of the most pressing issues by the Council.

In 2000, Alexander Machkevitch proposed to set up the Jewish Congress of Kazakhstan and became its President. He also headed the Eurasian Jewish Congress aimed to encourage communication between nations and faiths.

Alexander Machkevitch directly supervised numerous social and educational projects.

He was awarded the Order of Kurmet in 2001 for major contribution to Kazakhstan’s social and economic development, the Order of Barys (3rd class) in 2011 for special merits in economic, social, cultural and public activities, and the Order of Parasat in 2016. In 2021, on the occasion of the 30 years anniversary of Kazakhstan’s independence, Alexander Machkevitch received the Order of Barys (1st class) for his outstanding contribution to the country’s social and economic development and for his public activities.
